ASO Community Engagement Photo Winner in National Contest

The Sheriff’s Office is excited to be one of 12 winners in the 2026 photo contest sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS). ASO’s winning submission (right), “Connecting with our Future,” features Sergeant Juarez with Emily, a school safety patrol member, at a community event last year. After meeting the Cora Kelly student and recognizing her commitment to keeping her classmates safe, Sergeant Juarez was proud to pin a junior deputy badge on Emily’s safety patrol belt. This year’s contest theme was Uplifting the Image: Highlighting Heroes and according to the COPS website, winners were “selected from inspiring submissions that highlight policing in action and honor our nation’s law enforcement heroes.”

Five Deputies Graduate from Rappahannock Regional Criminal Justice Academy

Congratulations to Deputy Beasley, Deputy Bird, Deputy Carrillo, Deputy Delacruz, and Deputy Nare on their graduation from the Rappahannock Regional Criminal Justice Academy! All five successfully completed eight weeks of rigorous training in defensive tactics, firearms, legal standards, and communication, as well as specialized jail operations such as contraband control, inmate classification, and transport. During the March 18  graduation ceremony, Deputy Beasley spoke on behalf of Jail Officer Basic Class 221. She highlighted the incredible teamwork of her peers and thanked the academy staff for their unwavering support. The new graduates took their oaths of office the next day at the courthouse and are now continuing their training at the Adult Detention Center.

Sheriff Promotes Sergeant Reyes

Sheriff Sean Casey is proud to announce the promotion of our newest supervisor, Sergeant Reyes. Sergeant Reyes began his ASO career in 2021 and served in the Adult Detention Center until becoming the Fleet and Uniform Deputy in fall 2024. In addition to his regular duties, he has participated in community outreach and been on the Sheriff’s Employee Advisory Committee, Core Equity Team, and organizing committees for employee recognition ceremonies. Sergeant Reyes is a General, Control Tactics, and Firearms Instructor and is currently working toward his Emergency Vehicle Operators Course Instructor certification. Please join us in congratulating Sergeant Reyes and wishing him continued success!

Inmates Active in Enrichment Programs and Vocational Training

ASO continues to provide engaging and valuable development opportunities for inmates. This month, 10 Spanish-speaking inmates completed training in traffic flagging and construction site safety, earning professional certifications in both that will make them more competitive for employment after their release. On March 12, three female inmates also completed our first-ever class in hair braiding, a six-week hands-on program where they developed skills and knowledge that can benefit them when they are released and throughout their lives. And thanks to our volunteers, like those from Georgetown University (right), inmates can receive GED tutoring, join psychology and reading discussion groups, and participate in a creative writing program.

Trailblazing Judges Speak at Women’s History Month Tea

In recognition of Women’s History Month, the Honorable Sonya L. Sacks and the Honorable Jane Reynolds joined several of our female inmates for a tea. They shared their own stories, provided encouragement, and told the women not to be discouraged by any setbacks. The judges reassured them that this chapter in their lives does not define them and that they believe in second chances. Judge Sacks is the first Black woman appointed to Alexandria General District Court, and Judge Reynolds, who grew up in Alexandria, is the first Black woman appointed to the 15th Judicial Circuit.

Then you can safely dispose of your expired and unneeded prescription medications at the upcoming Drug Take Back Day. On Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., ASO and APD will be staffing drop-off locations across Alexandria. Check online to find a location close to you!
