Citizen Science
Citizen science provides opportunities for more data about the natural world. While it cannot replace scientific studies, it can supplement data to provide more context about what may need more in-depth research. Some examples of citizen science for natural resource inventories include:
eBird App
The eBird app allows you to track bird distribution, abundance, habitat use, and trends through data collected within a simple, scientific framework. More than 100 million sightings are shared annually by e-birders worldwide and is used for bird counts by Alexandria's own Buddie Ford Nature Center.
Seek App by iNaturalist
The Seek app allows for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations across the globe. It gives suggestions of potential identification for plants, mushrooms, and animals of all kinds based on expected species in your location and allows verified naturalists to confirm your identification.
Citizenscience.gov
Citizenscience.gov acts as a repository for agency-partnered citizen science projects in several topics ranging from water quality monitoring (Chesapeake water watch), to seed genetic diversity (Grow for tomorrow), and many more.
