Project Description
The Del Ray Gateway project will redevelop the triangle park at the corners of Mount Vernon and Commonwealth Avenues. The site will be designed and developed in phases. The Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities (RPCA) is currently undertaking a project to transform the existing pool into an interactive fountain/splash park. The improvements are funded through the City of Alexandria’s Capital Improvement Program and a Community Matching Fund partnership with The Del Ray Gateway Project.

Construction
- April 2025: The construction safety fence was installed, as were the erosion and sediment control measures. Other construction mobilization measures are now complete, including items such as the construction trailer delivery and installation of additional site signage. The signage and fencing will be monitored throughout construction and adjusted as needed. Demolition of the existing pool began on April 18, and the main demolition work is now complete. The former pool debris will be removed from the site over the next few weeks, and work will begin on filling the hole and leveling the area.
- March 2025: Construction activities and project mobilization began on March 31.
- In the next two weeks, the community can expect to see further preparations on the parking lot, installation of tree protection, delivery of the construction trailer, and initial excavation of the old pool.
- February 2025: The City and Contractor continued pre-construction activities, including coordination on permits, supplies, and construction preparations. A community meeting will be held in early March.
- December 2024: Pre-construction activities and project mobilization preparations began in November and continued through December. This includes administrative work to prepare for construction and mobilization on-site.
- November 2024: City/Contractor pre-construction kick-off meeting
- October 2024: Construction Contract Awarded
