Clerk of Circuit Courts - Land Records

The Land Records Division records documents from property transactions and in the City of Alexandria, assesses and collects required recordation taxes and fees for each document, and maintains the record of judgments and financing statements.
Real property transactions involving property located in the Alexandria portion of Fairfax County must be recorded with the Fairfax Circuit Court.

Filing with the Court

Recordings are processed from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday – Friday, except holidays.

Recordings may be filed in any of the following ways. Please do not file the same documents in multiple ways, as it may slow down our processing of your item.

  1. In Person at our counter from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday – Friday.

Please note our office is closed on Federal, State, City, and Supreme Court Holidays.

 2. By U.S. Mail or commercial delivery service

Land Records Copies

The following land records are available in the Clerk’s Office in the following formats:

  • Physical Records from December 1782 until October 1993 are available in
    • Printed indexes
    • Books
    • Microfilm
  • Online Records from January 1785 through 1798 and after January 1930, are maintained in an automated Supreme Court of Virginia Records Indexing System available in the Clerk's Office or via an online records system by subscription. See Online Records, below.

Copies are $0.50 per page; and $2.00 for certification of a copy.

Online Records

Secure Remote Access - To facilitate remote research and reduce the need to visit the courthouse, secure remote access fees will be waived for 30 days for new subscribers. Existing online access subscribers have received a free 30-day extension which was added to the end of their current subscription period. To request remote access visit https://alexandriava.gov/courtrecords and click "New Subscriber Registration."

Secure Remote Access (SRA) can now be paid online using a credit or debit card via the Virginia Judicial Online Payment System (VJOPS). A 4% convenience fee will be added to payments made via VJOPS.  To pay online follow this link: Online Services (vacourts.gov)
