CDC Eviction Moratorium No Longer in Effect, But State Eviction Protections Extend to June 2022

August 27, 2021--A Supreme Court ruling today struck down the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) eviction moratorium extension, but the Virginia eviction protections are still in effect until June 30, 2022. With the uncertainty around frequently changing eviction moratoriums and protections, the City of Alexandria urges landlords and renters to act now to prevent evictions by accessing rent relief assistance, affordable housing options and resources to help meet basic needs.  

State eviction protections prevent landlords from taking action to evict for nonpayment if the household has had financial hardship directly or indirectly due to COVID-19 unless certain terms are not met, such as tenants are found ineligible for the Virginia Rent Relief Program (RRP) or refuse to cooperate with the RRP application, RRP is not approved, or RRP runs out of money. RRP provides rent relief to both renters and landlords:   

  • RRP provides eligible renters with assistance to cover rent payments past due beginning April 1, 2020. Renters can submit applications online or call 703.962.1884 for more information.   
  • Landlords can apply on behalf of tenants to receive financial assistance for past-due and current rental payments. Landlords can submit applications online, email rentrelief@virginiahousing.com, or call the City of Alexandria Office of Housing at 703.746.4990 for eligibility assistance.  

The City’s Department of Community and Human Services (DCHS) Office of Community Services (OCS) also provides rental assistance to eligible households facing a housing crisis or homelessness. Residents can call the DCHS Customer Call Center at 703.746.5700 or text 703.346.5599 to learn about rental assistance, as well as other available emergency assistance.
