The Virginia 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is a free, confidential support service available 24/7 to anyone in emotional distress, experiencing a mental health crisis, or concerned about someone's well-being. Dialing 988 connects you with trained crisis counselors who are ready to listen, support, and guide you toward the help you need.

When should you call 988?

You can call or text 988 if you or someone you know is:

  • Feeling overwhelmed or hopeless
  • Thinking about suicide
  • Experiencing anxiety, depression, or extreme emotional distress
  • Concerned about substance use
  • Struggling with grief, trauma, or relationship issues
  • Worried about the mental health of a loved one

What Happens When You Call?

  1. When you dial 988, you'll be connected to a local crisis center in Virginia.
  2. A trained counselor will talk with you, listen without judgment, and help you navigate the next steps.
  3. You can also text 988 or use the online chat at 988Lifeline.org.

This service is:

  • Free
  • Confidential
  • Available 24/7

Virginia's 988 Lifeline network is a part of a national system, but local crisis centers are staffed by people who understand Virginia's mental health resources and communities. They can also connect you with local support services if needed.
