About the Fund
The Department of Community and Human Services (DCHS) coordinates and administers the Alexandria Fund for Human Services (AFHS). Through a competitive grant application process, AFHS provides funding to nonprofit organizations whose programs and services meet human service needs for the City's most marginalized residents across the lifespan to ensure wellbeing, safety, self-sufficiency, and resilience through equitable processes, practices, and outcomes.
Alexandria Fund for Human Services FY 2027-2029 Grant Cycle Now Open
The Department of Community and Human Services is pleased to announce that the Alexandria Fund for Human Services is now accepting grant proposals for the FY 2027-2029 grant cycle.
What's New: Based on independent evaluation and community feedback, AFHS has been restructured to better serve our nonprofit partners:
- Three grant categories: Standard Grants ($10,001-$75,000), Mini Grants ($7,000-$10,000), and Incubator Grants ($7,000-$10,000)
- Five refined priorities aligned to Essential Human Services: Basic Needs Fulfillment, Vulnerability and Equity, Health and Safety, Economic Stability and Support, and Social Functioning and Cohesion
- Enhanced technical assistance: Pre-proposal training sessions and weekly office hours (January 22 - February 13)

Community Science AFHS Evaluation
The Department of Community and Human Services is pleased to share the recently completed evaluation of the Alexandria Fund for Human Services. We are grateful to all those who contributed to this study, sharing your experiences, your insights, and recommendations. We also want to acknowledge Community Science, the research and evaluation firm that carried out the evaluation. Community Science is a MWBE with more than twenty-five years of experience providing consultation, research and evaluation and strategy development to foundations, nonprofit organizations, and governments. Their research and evaluation approach has been rooted in a mission that uses science to promote equity and justice for communities of color and others who are historically disadvantaged and excluded.
