Celebrate Kwanzaa and Story Time at the Alexandria Black History Museum This Saturday

Kwanzaa Workshop and Story Time

This Saturday, December 14 head to the Alexandria Black History Museum for a morning of learning and fun! The museum will host two engaging programs that celebrate African American culture and the traditions of Kwanzaa, making it the perfect family outing. 

Start the day with Story Time for Little Historians from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Dynamic storytellers will captivate children ages 5–8 with books written by and about African American people and other communities of color. This program is free and sets the stage for a day of cultural enrichment.

At 11 a.m., stay for the 2024 Kwanzaa How-To Workshop – an interactive, family-friendly session designed to immerse participants in the origins, principles, and practices of Kwanzaa. The program includes:

  • A candle-lighting ceremony
  • Food tastings inspired by Kwanzaa traditions
  • Craft ideas and decorating tips for your celebration

Kwanzaa, a seven-day cultural celebration beginning December 26 and ending January 1, was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga to reaffirm African American heritage and community bonds. The workshop will delve into the holiday’s seven guiding principles: Unity (Umoja), Self-Determination (Kujichagulia), Collective Work and Responsibility (Ujima), Cooperative Economics (Ujamaa), Purpose (Nia), Creativity (Kuumba), and Faith (Imani).
