Supporting Alexandrians During the Federal Government Shutdown
The City of Alexandria is committed to ensuring residents have the resources and support they need during the federal government shutdown. From federal employees and contractors to local business owners, many are feeling the impact. The City’s website provides quick access to programs and services offering food, financial, and housing assistance, along with mental health and employment resources to help individuals and families stay supported.

Older Adults
Medicare Open Enrollment Events for Residents of City of Alexandria
Medicare open enrollment is now through December 7. This is your once-a-year opportunity to review, change, or renew your Medicare coverage. State-certified counselors from Alexandria’s Virginia Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program (VICAP) are providing several events starting November 3 at the Charles Houston Recreation Center.
Throughout November residents may also schedule individual sessions by appointment to review your coverage and make any necessary changes.

Alexandria’s Division of Aging and Adult Services offers a free online learning platform for caregivers, called Trualta. Once registered you will have unlimited access to explore webinars, support groups and other live events to learn and connect.
Relax & Recharge lets your busy mind finally take a break. When your thoughts won’t turn off and everything feels like too much, this space offers a gentle reset. Guided stillness and easy breathing help quiet the noise and bring you back to a place of calm. There’s nothing to perform or perfect—just come as you are, close your eyes, and let your nervous system rest. Cameras and microphones are off to allow you to fully relax and recharge.

Senior Services of Alexandria invites you to learn practical strategies from local experts in health, wellness, and home safety to help you stay balanced, confident, and independent. Annual Caregiver’s Conference: Putting the Pieces Together in Dementia Caregiving
Northern Virginia Dementia Care Consortium Members invites caregivers to its 39th annual conference featuring presentations from experts on caregiving, aging and dementia. Participants will also walk away with useful tips, tools, local resources and connections with fellow caregivers. Transitioning Out of Federal Government- For federal employees affected by layoffs, the Alexandria Workforce Development Center (WDC) has resources to support you including workshops, hiring fairs, and specialized programs to assist job seekers. Visit alexandriava.gov/go/6627 to access a growing library of resources such as job listings, resume tips, and guidance on benefits applications. Updated weekly with relevant information.
Featured Jobs- Compiled and released by the Workforce Development Center. Follow WDC on Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn for the latest or visit the WDC’s job board for a complete list of job opportunities. Free WDC Job Readiness Services- See job readiness and career development workshops — including interviewing skills, navigating the virtual job fair, transferable skills, one-on-one job coaching, networking and more — and over 5,000 SkillUp online skills training courses. Select WDC workshops are also available in Spanish.
Personal Finance and Career Building Classes- DCHS hosts a series of personal finance and career building classes. All classes are free, held virtually on Wednesdays from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. and are meant to help participants improve their financial life, manage budgets, improve income stability, advance monetary education, and reduce and eliminate debts. FOOD ASSISTANCE
The Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program offers one $50.00 benefit card to eligible City of Alexandria residents aged 60 or greater to use for locally grown fruits, vegetables and herbs at approved farmers’ markets.
Must be a City of Alexandria resident 60 years of age or more with a monthly income less than $2,413 for one person or $3,261 for two people. Apply online. Applications will not be available on-site at the markets. Apply in-person at Alexandria's Division of Aging and Adult Services (4850 Mark Center Drive, 9th Floor) 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. or print and mail an application to the Division of Aging and Adult Services. ALIVE! Food Hubs offer free food, personal items, cleaning supplies, school supplies, and referrals to other services. ALIVE! Food Hubs are for City of Alexandria residents. Proof of Alexandria residency may be requested. See the schedule and a list of locations. ALIVE! services also include Alexandria Eviction Prevention Partnership, ALIVE! House, Family Assistance, Furniture, and Housewares. Learn more.
Home Delivery Program - ALIVE! delivers food Monday-Friday afternoons to the doorsteps of those who are unable to attend emergency food distributions. Home deliveries are available to seniors, individuals with disabilities, and single parents with very young children. Clients may receive once-monthly groceries: 3-5 days of shelf-stable food, meat, milk, fresh bread, eggs, and produce. To receive home delivery, you must be referred by DCHS at 703.746.5700, an ALIVE! member congregation, or another social service agency. Using SNAP/EBT at Alexandria Farmers’ Markets -Alexandria’s participating farmers’ markets accept SNAP/EBT, making it easier for residents to access fresh, local produce. This initiative helps increase access to healthy food while supporting local farmers.

TRANSPORTATION
Reduced Transit Fare via "Metro Lift" - Metro offers reduced fares to assist low-income customers via the 'Metro Lift' program. Customers in DC, Maryland and Virginia who qualify for the US Department of Agriculture's Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) are eligible to enroll. Customers enrolled in Metro Lift will receive a 50 percent discount for any trip on Metrorail and Metrobus. Online enrollment and appointment scheduling are available at the WMATA website.
Senior Taxi Yellow Card Program - The City offers a Senior Taxi Yellow Card Program which is operated in partnership with Yellow Cab of Alexandria, Inc. This program is available to individuals aged 60 or older who live in the City of Alexandria and whose annual gross household income meets requirements. Seniors can apply for the Senior Taxi Discount program by calling 703.746.5999.
