Dialing 988 connects you with trained crisis counselors who are ready to listen, support, and guide you toward the help you need.
When should you call 988?
You can call or text 988 if you or someone you know is:
- Feeling overwhelmed or hopeless
- Thinking about suicide
- Experiencing anxiety, depression, or extreme emotional distress
- Concerned about substance use
- Struggling with grief, trauma, or relationship issues
- Worried about the mental health of a loved one
What Happens When You Call?
- When you dial 988, you'll be connected to a local crisis center in Virginia.
- A trained counselor will talk with you, listen without judgment, and help you navigate the next steps.

Suicide is a public health crisis in Virginia and nationwide. Some groups face higher risk, including LGBTQ+ youth, veterans, middle-aged adults, and people with disabilities.
The Suicide Prevention Alliance of Northern Virginia (SPAN) is a regional coalition of Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax–Falls Church, Loudoun, and Prince William CSBs and community partners. SPAN works to raise awareness, share resources, and provide training to help prevent suicide across Northern Virginia.
