Alexandria Police Department Launches Holiday Crime Prevention Plan

The Alexandria Police Department (APD) launched its Holiday Crime Prevention Plan on November 21, 2025. The citywide safety initiative runs now through the first of the year to help deter seasonal increases in thefts, robberies, larcenies, and traffic-related offenses.

The initiative builds on Alexandria’s continued progress in public safety, as crime continues to trend downward.

A Strategic and Data-Driven Approach

APD’s Holiday Crime Prevention Plan combines high-visibility patrols, focused enforcement, community engagement, and technology to prevent crime and increase safety during the busiest shopping and travel period of the year. Officers will conduct foot and mobile patrols, with cruiser steady-burn lights used to enhance visibility.

High-Visibility Patrols

Residents and visitors will see presence across:

  • Retail corridors
  • Shopping centers and grocery stores
  • Business districts
  • Transit areas
  • High-density residential communities

FOCUSED Enforcement

Using analysis from the previous year, APD identified specific areas where larcenies, robberies, and other offenses typically rise during the holidays. Focusing resources helps ensure timely responses, deter criminal activity, and support ongoing investigations. Enforcement efforts will be supported by:

  • Criminal Investigations Section personnel
  • Surveillance and fugitive apprehension teams
  • Public safety cameras and real-time monitoring
  • Proactive traffic enforcement and message boards

Community Engagement

APD’s Crime Prevention Officers and Community Engagement staff will continue collaborating with businesses, community organizations, and neighborhood associations to:

  • Share holiday safety information
  • Strengthen communication networks
  • Provide educational materials
  • Gather feedback throughout the season

This outreach is designed to support both awareness and participation, keeping residents informed and engaged.

Public Safety Tips for the Holiday Season

Residents can help reduce crime and stay safe by taking a few simple precautions:

Protect Your Package Deliveries

Use secure delivery lockers, track packages, or arrange for a trusted neighbor to collect them.

Stay Alert

Avoid distractions when walking to or from your vehicle; stay in well-lit areas; have your keys ready.

Protect Your Vehicle

Always lock your car, remove valuables, and never leave your vehicle running and unattended.

Report Suspicious Activity

If something doesn’t seem right, say something.

Emergency: 9-1-1

Non-emergency: 703-746-4444

A Safer, More Welcoming Alexandria

The Holiday Crime Prevention Plan supports the City of Alexandria’s commitment to a safe, welcoming community for those who live, work, and visit. As the holiday season begins, APD encourages everyone to protect your package deliveries, stay alert, protect your vehicle and report suspicious activity.
