New Hair Braiding Class Brings New Opportunities to Women in Custody Nine women at the Adult Detention Center are braiding their way toward a brighter future through a new six-week program. Under the expert instruction of professional braider Ja'Pria Tyler (at right), these students are learning both the intricate art of braiding as well as business basics including customer service and professional etiquette. This hands-on program is about more than just hair; it’s about equipping women with the marketable skills they need to succeed and thrive when they return to the community. |

ASO Celebrates Black History Month Sheriff Casey and ASO recognized February as Black History Month by taking part in several activities that highlight the importance of African American heritage. Our Core Equity Team toured Freedom House Museum (at right) to better understand Alexandria's and our country's complicated past, and Sheriff Casey joined other Lions Club members at The Lyceum for the annual James Bland Music competition, named in honor of the noted African American composer. Our Inmate Services team held a program for people in custody featuring the movie “Selma,” and ASO also featured posts about our own trailblazers on social media. |

Remain Vigilant to Stop Phone Scams Scammers are relentless so we need everyone to keep their guard up! Scammers continue to pose as law enforcement officers, even using fake caller ID that makes them look legitimate. They try to intimidate their targets by saying you missed jury duty or have an outstanding warrant. Just hang up! If you receive a message about an “urgent” or “important” matter, do not return their call. Call our Office directly at 703.746.4114. You can listen to an actual scam message, so you won’t be alarmed if you do receive one. Please discuss this with friends and family because unfortunately, Alexandrians are still being victimized. |

Help Keep Kids Safe by Securing your Firearms This month, a six-year-old boy in Montgomery County tragically died after unintentionally shooting himself in the face. ASO wants to help keep kids safe and reminds residents who own firearms to be sure they are properly secured and stored. We encourage parents to discuss gun safety with their own children and if your child visits other homes, be sure to talk with those parents and caregivers in advance about their firearms storage. Need a gun lock? You can pick one up 24/7 at the Public Safety Center and during regular hours at other locations. |
