ASO Salutes Outstanding Employees at Annual Awards Ceremony

On April 21, the Sheriff's Office celebrated the success of our own staff at the annual employee awards ceremony. The program featured Dwayne Crawford, Executive Director of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, delivering the keynote speech and Sheriff Sean Casey presenting individual and team awards. Colleagues recognized deputies and professional staff for their outstanding performance, team spirit, leadership, and other areas. Alexandria American Legion Post 24 also recognized Deputy Cromer as its Law Enforcement Officer of the Year for exemplifying our Office’s values of integrity, respect, professionalism, and unity, and for his significant impact in keeping staff and inmates safe through his exceptional de-escalation skills.

Second Chance Month Reentry Fair Empowers Residents

On April 23, in recognition of Second Chance Month, our Inmate Services team hosted the annual Reentry Resource Fair. This event helps prepare Adult Detention Center residents for successful new beginnings, resulting in a stronger, safer community. Having support from beyond the jail is critical, so to ensure our residents have those connections, we brought in community partners offering services and programs for housing, health, job training, peer counseling, and more. Residents visited with exhibitors and explored resources that will aid them when they return to the community.

Sheriff’s Community Academy Graduates 14 in Spring Session

This spring 14 Alexandrians spent their Saturday mornings as the newest class of the Sheriff’s Community Academy. Over four weeks, they toured the Adult Detention Center and Courthouse, saw demonstrations, participated in hands-on activities, and heard from sworn and professional staff about their duties and efforts to keep inmates and the community safe. They asked our team lots of questions as they learned about the role of the Sheriff’s Office in Alexandria’s criminal justice system. On the final day, Sheriff Casey presented each with a challenge coin and certificate of appreciation and thanked them for their commitment. Captain Wade Completes Leadership Alexandria

Congratulations to Captain Quentin Wade and his Leadership Alexandria classmates! They just wrapped up the Chamber of Commerce’s transformative nine-month leadership development program that looks at what drives our city, from economic development and education to local and state government. Leadership Alexandria offers behind-the-scenes access through on-site visits and direct dialogues with leaders across the private and public sectors. Captain Wade especially appreciated the contributions of government and other officials and the opportunity to form relationships with his classmates, particularly those he would not have otherwise met. Congrats to the Class of 2026 for challenging themselves and many thanks to all who made this rewarding opportunity possible!

Connecting with our Community

Sheriff Casey and our team continue to be highly engaged with our community, taking part in organized events and meeting our neighbors where they are for meaningful conversations. Sheriff Casey recently participated in the Days of Remembrance ceremony in honor of Holocaust victims, and he also attended the Alexandria Community Remembrance Project’s program in memory of lynching victim Joseph McCoy. ASO teamed up with our public safety partners for family fun at the Egg Hunt Egg-Stravaganza at Charles Houston and dropped in at Star Beauty Salon and Barber in Chirilagua, where Deputy Gomez is a longtime client, to talk with the business owners and other clients and answer any questions they had (right). We always welcome opportunities to build relationships with our neighbors!

Update on Drug Take Back Day and Drop Box Collection

Our thanks to everyone who cleaned out their medicine cabinets and then safely disposed of expired and unwanted prescription medications at Drug Take Back Day! ASO and APD staffed four drop-off locations, including one outside The Neighborhood Pharmacy, which also has a permanent drop box inside. Between Drug Take Back Day and the collection from The Neighborhood Pharmacy, we safely recovered 356 pounds of potentially dangerous medications and prevented them from being diverted and misused. Don’t worry if you missed us – you have lots of options to dispose of unneeded medications safely!
