Protecting students as they walk, bike, and travel to and from school each day is the Alexandria Police Department's highest priority. School zone speed cameras are an important tool for encouraging safer driving and helping keep our school communities safe.

Following a public inquiry, APD identified a programming issue affecting the eastbound school zone speed camera on Seminary Road at Francis C. Hammond Middle School. A review determined that 115 citations were issued outside the enforcement period between August 18, 2025, and February 26, 2026.

All affected citations have been dismissed, paid citations are being automatically refunded, and motorists do not need to take any action to receive a refund.

APD also audited the City's other 11 school zone speed cameras and confirmed they were operating correctly. To help prevent a recurrence, we have strengthened our procedures by adding independent verification, written confirmation of schedule changes, and regular camera audits.

Maintaining safe school zones requires both effective enforcement and public trust. APD remains committed to administering the City's automated enforcement program with accuracy and transparency.
