Educational Resources

A variety of educational programs are offered throughout the week and year. Many programs require advance registration and some are scheduled only a few times a year, so be sure to contact the Curator of Education to make your reservations today!

School Programs

Gadsby’s Tavern Museum offers a variety of school tour programs tailored to match the curricula of students in the classroom. Educators may choose from one of our pre-packaged programs for grades K through 6 or work with the museum educator to create their own tour experience. Lessons are free to Alexandria City Public School groups, and $3 per person ($40 minimum) for all other groups.

Adult Programs

Group tours for 10 or more people are offered by reservation at the discounted rate of $4 per person during regular hours. Groups are also welcome to arrange a time outside of regular museum hours. Cost is $6 per person with a $100 minimum. Costumed guides are available for an additional $50 flat rate. In order to receive the group rate, tours must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance of the tour date and pay in full before day of arrival. For more information or to book a group tour, please contact the Curator of Education.

There are also a variety of lectures and living history programs of interest for adults. Consult the Historic Alexandria Calendar for upcoming programs.

Camp and Daycare Programs

Daycares and camps can explore the museum and discover what it was like to travel over 200 years ago in Alexandria. Choose from one of our three programs specially designed for camp and daycare groups ages 4 and up. Cost for the approximately one-hour programs is $5 per child (minimum of $30) with up to 5 adults admitted free. History camps sponsored by local museum and historic societies receive a discount. Contact the Curator of Education to schedule your program. Tour times available Tuesday through Friday in the mornings or afternoons. Take home a souvenir goody bag that includes a museum pencil, sticker, and postcard! Goody bags are an additional $1.25 per bag and must be ordered when you schedule your program.

Scout Programs

Scouting groups interested in experiencing history first-hand will enjoy the programs at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum. Combine a 45-minute tour of the Museum with a visit to Old Town Alexandria. Reservations are required for many of our special events; tickets can be purchased online. Learn more about Scout and Family Programming at Gadsby's and throughout Historic Alexandria.

Special Needs

Groups with special needs can call in advance to arrange a program and work directly with the Curator of Education to ensure your Museum experience fits the needs of all in your group. The tavern buildings are multi-level and do not have elevators; however, if notified when scheduling the program, adjustments can be made to include all to the best of our ability. Sign language and foreign language interpreters may also be available if requested at least two weeks in advance when making your reservation.

Educational Outreach Kits

Want to bring objects, primary source documents, and images into your classroom? Then look no further than the Museum's Outreach Kits. The Tavern in a Trunk is designed to bring all of this and more directly to the students.
