City officials continue to monitor and respond to yesterday’s rain and snow conditions while preparing for freezing temperatures and ice in the forecast. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Cold Weather Advisory, effective from 7 p.m. this evening through 10 a.m. Tuesday, with wind chills expected to drop as low as -5°F.
Temperatures today will remain in the teens and 20s, leading to limited melting and the potential for refreeze on untreated surfaces. Slick spots are possible, particularly on elevated surfaces such as bridges and overpasses. Those traveling or venturing outside should exercise caution and allow extra time for commutes, maintaining additional stopping distance between vehicles.
How the City is Responding
The Department of Transportation & Environmental Services continues clearing streets and treating freeze-prone areas, with a focus on elevated surfaces such as bridges and overpasses. Crews are monitoring conditions for refreeze and remain prepared to mobilize additional resources as necessary.
The Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Affairs (RPCA) are prioritizing snow clearance at City schools, public facilities, Metro stations, and key pedestrian corridors. Snow removal continues within the City’s park system, including paved trails, parking lots, and interior paths. RPCA will monitor freeze-thaw conditions throughout the coming week and respond as needed.
Seasonal Winter Shelter
Due to weather conditions and extreme temperatures, the Winter Shelter (2355-A Mill Rd.) will remain open 24/7 starting Sunday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. through Thursday, Jan. 23 at noon. Warming center information is available to the public on the City’s Winter Shelter page.
