The Alexandria History Museum at The Lyceum will be the venue for Hidden Nurses, a compelling lecture by Dr. Victoria Tucker, on Thursday, March 27, from 7 to 9 p.m. Dr. Tucker, a nurse and public historian, will share her groundbreaking research on the history of African American nursing students in Albemarle County, Virginia.

African American LPN Nurses
J.P. Burley Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) Students

While pursuing a Ph.D. in Nursing at the University of Virginia (UVA), Dr. Tucker uncovered the remarkable story of African American nurses who, despite being barred from attending UVA, pursued their careers through the segregated J.P. Burley High School. Through extensive research involving archival materials, oral histories, and material culture, she has shed light on their struggles and triumphs. Dr. Tucker’s work has led to a formal apology from UVA and the dedication of a memorial bench and natural space in their honor.

Presented by the City of Alexandria’s African American History Division, part of Historic Alexandria, this event offers a unique opportunity to explore a critical chapter in the history of healthcare and racial justice.
