Alexandria to Commemorate 81st Anniversary of D-Day with Special Events

Alexandria, VA — The City of Alexandria will pay tribute to the heroes of D-Day with two special events marking the 81st anniversary of the historic invasion. Hosted by the Alexandria-Caen Sister City Committee, the 15th Annual D-Day Commemoration and an exclusive lecture by renowned military historian Dr. Kim Holien will honor the sacrifices of those who fought for freedom on June 6, 1944.

The 15th Annual D-Day Commemoration will take place on Sunday, June 1, 2025, from 1 – 4 p.m. at Market Square (301 King Street). This free event will immerse attendees in the spirit of the 1940s with:

  • World War II reenactors and historical displays
  • Live 1940s jazz and swing dancing
  • The U.S. Army Fife and Drum Corps
  • A French market and children’s activities
  • A commemorative ceremony featuring special guests and local officials

In addition, on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at 7 p.m., Dr. Kim Holien will present a compelling lecture at the Alexandria History Museum at The Lyceum (201 S. Washington Street). Titled "Eisenhower's Top Secrets from D-Day to V-E Day", the talk will offer expert insights into the strategic, historical, and human dimensions of D-Day. Tickets are $15 for in-person attendance, available at AlexandriaVA.gov/Shop.

Remembering the Historic Turning Point of World War II

D-Day, June 6, 1944, marked the largest amphibious invasion in history, launching the Allied liberation of Nazi-occupied France. Commanded by General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Operation Overlord deployed 156,115 troops from the United States, Britain, and Canada in a daring assault on Normandy’s fortified coastline. The landings spanned five key beaches: Utah and Omaha (U.S.), Gold and Sword (British), and Juno (Canadian).

Despite fierce German resistance—especially at Omaha Beach, where some of the war’s bloodiest fighting occurred—the Allies secured their foothold by nightfall. The invasion came at a heavy cost, with 4,500 Allied troops killed, including 2,499 Americans in the first 24 hours. Yet, their bravery paved the way for the capture of Cherbourg, the fierce battle for Caen, and the decisive Falaise Pocket battle in August, which sealed the German retreat from France. Less than a year later, Nazi Germany surrendered on May 8, 1945.

While “D-Day” is a military term used for any operation launch, the sheer scale and significance of Operation Overlord have made June 6, 1944, forever synonymous with courage, sacrifice, and the turning point of World War II.
