Specialty Tour: Women in Medicine

This tour will be offered on March 8 and March 22.

While men often take the spotlight, women have always shaped the practice of medicine. This tour will explore many objects in the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum used by women from the late 18th through early 20th centuries, as well as the women's influence on medicine in Alexandria and the wider world during this period. Tour is 11 a.m.-noon. Please arrive between 10:45-11:00 a.m. as the museum is not open to the public until 1 p.m. and the doors will be locked when the tour begins. Please note the tour involves ascending and descending stairs.

Tickets are available now at alexandriava.gov/Shop. Tours are $15 per person, $12 for Office of Historic Alexandria (OHA) Members. Advance purchase is recommended. Proceeds support Historic Alexandria’s museums.

About the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum:

The Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum is noted for its outstanding collection of medicinal herbs, shop furnishings, and apothecary bottles and equipment. Most of its collection is original to the 141-year-old family business, reflecting how medicine, the business, and Alexandria changed through the centuries. It also has a spectacular collection of archival materials, including journals, letters and diaries, prescription and formula books, ledgers, orders and invoices.

The Apothecary Museum is located at 105-107 South Fairfax Street in Old Town Alexandria and is owned and operated by the City of Alexandria as part of the Office of Historic Alexandria.
