Visitors are invited to experience the special exhibition, “Lewis Cass White: Preserving the Legacy of Fort Stevens,” at Fort Ward Museum & Historic Site before it closes on Sunday, March 29. The exhibit commemorates the 160th anniversary of the Battle of Fort Stevens and highlights the inspiring efforts of a Civil War veteran to recognize and preserve this historic site.

The exhibition features personal accounts, documents, photographs, and veterans’ memorabilia that tell the story of Fort Stevens—the only battle fought in the Defenses of Washington. Guests can also explore the grounds of Fort Ward, including the earthwork remains and the fully restored Northwest bastion, the best preserved of the Union forts that comprised the historic defense system.

A final specialty tour, “Specialty Tour: Fort Ward & Lewis Cass White,” will take place at 10 a.m. on March 28, 2026. This guided experience offers a deeper look into the exhibition and the historic site. Participants are encouraged to arrive five minutes before the tour begins and wear appropriate shoes for walking on the earthwork fort.

Visitors can continue to explore this history beyond the exhibition through the online Lewis Cass White exhibit and the online Lewis Cass White collection, which remain accessible.

Tickets are available at: https://shop.alexandriava.gov/Events.aspx. Admission is $15, or $12 for Historic Alexandria members and volunteers. Doors will be locked at the start of the tour.

Following the closure of the Lewis Cass White exhibition, the museum will begin installation of a new Civil War music exhibit, planned to open in April.
