Project Summary

The City of Alexandria, Transportation and Environmental Services, Public Works Services Division, is repaving Union Street starting August 23, 2021. The repaving of Union Street has been phased into five (5) sections to provide clear impacts of work within a specific date range(s), as provided in the Planned Paving Schedule.

Current Progress

Prior to the repaving of Union Street, the City has been in the process of making other repairs and improvements along the edge of the roadway.  These improvements have and will continue to involve curb and gutter, selected handicap ramps for access and selected pedestrian safety improvements.  The work is intended to continue during the phased paving and may continue after the paving is completed.

Scheduling is highly dependent on weather conditions.

HOURS OF OPERATION

Work will begin each morning at 7:00 am and last until approximately 3:30 pm each day as indicated within the Planned Paving Schedule.  The Contractor may be moving equipment to and from staging areas prior to this time, so additional delays may occur.

Work is not planned for holidays and/or weekends.  Work will also stop due to inclement weather or high tide from the Potomac River.

CONSTRUCTION IMPACTS

The work will occur in two-block sections with the intent to complete each section within two days. For us to move efficiently and quickly without delays, we are asking for everyone’s help with the following:

  • Be attentive to the temporary no parking signs that will be placed prior to paving a particular block(s)
  • In event of weather delays, temporary no parking signs will be modified
  • All vehicles shall be moved off the street prior to 6:30 am each morning.
  • No parking of private vehicles (even short stopping) in the current section that is being paved
  • Please pay attention to detours, as traffic in the immediate and surrounding area will to be re-directed.
  • City T&ES staff will be on the scene for the duration of the project.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1: Will repaving equipment be left on the street?

A1: The repaving equipment will have a designated staging area.

Q2: Will the entire street be closed within a 4 to 5 block repaving segment?

A2: No. We plan to close half the street at a time per 1 to 2 block repaving segments. There will be guidance on how through traffic should proceed during the repaving work.  Most traffic will be redirected, with an exception of local residents, emergency vehicles, delivery vehicles and transportation vehicles.

Q3: Will a City employee be available to answer questions?

A3: City staff inspectors will be on-site during the repaving work.
