Arlington Ridge Road/Mount Vernon Avenue Bridge Reconstruction Project

Arlington County and the City of Alexandria are working as partners on the Arlington Ridge Road/Mount Vernon Avenue Bridge Reconstruction Project.

The project will replace the deteriorated roadway and underlying bridge deck of the bridge between Arlington County and the City of Alexandria. The project will return the bridge to a safe operational condition for all users and improve access for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Construction is underway and starting in mid-November, the southbound lanes on the Arlington Ridge Road/Mount Vernon Avenue bridge will close for approximately 11 months for the first phase of bridge reconstruction, and all traffic will be shifted to the northside (east side) of the bridge.

  • There will be one vehicle lane in each direction, and the east sidewalk will remain open.
  • The Four Mile Run trail underpass on the Arlington County side will close intermittently for a few days at a time during periods of demolition work on the bridge surface; trail users will be able to detour via South Glebe Road and South Lang Street to reconnect with the Four Mile Run Trail.
  • The Four Mile Run Park and shopping center on the City of Alexandria side will be right-in/right-out only in front of the project.

This is the first phase of reconstruction of the bridge, starting with reconstructing the west side of the bridge. After the first half of the bridge is rebuilt, the project will switch all traffic to the rebuilt west half to close and reconstruct the bridge.

The bridge will continue to operate during construction with reduced lane capacity for vehicular traffic. Pedestrians and bicyclists will continue to have access to the bridge through the project construction.
