Mt. Vernon Avenue Paving Project 2020
Project Summary
The City of Alexandria, Public Works Services Division, is repaving Mount Vernon Avenue during the summer months of 2020. The overall paving project will start at the intersection of Mount Vernon Avenue and East Braddock Road, then proceed northbound to Herbert Street. It is anticipated that the project will be broken into two phases for construction. Construction will consist of:
- Curb and gutter improvements as needed
- Improving select ADA ramps (Americans with Disabilities)
- Updating existing crosswalks to high visibility crosswalks
Current Progress
Phase 1 - Completed
The first phase includes Mt. Vernon Avenue, from East Braddock Road to East Raymond Avenue.
Phase 2
The second phase includes Mt. Vernon Avenue, from East Raymond Avenue to Herbert. It is anticipated to begin in August 2020.
Construction Impacts
The work will occur in three-block sections with the intent to complete each section within five days. Please be aware of the following during this project
No vehicles may be parked on the affected street sections during the work. Temporary No Parking signs will be posted prior to any construction activity. In the event of delays, temporary signs will be adjusted accordingly. Traffic in the immediate and surrounding area may need to be re-directed--please observe traffic detours and other traffic signs. City T&ES staff will be on the scene for the duration of the project.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q1: The City has recently repaved some of Mt. Vernon. Is all this Mt. Vernon segment being repaved?
A1: The 1600 block to 1800 block of Mt. Vernon was recently paved and is in good condition. The roadway on these blocks will not be resurfaced during this project.
Q2: What days and time will the repaving occur?
A2: The repaving work will happen during the day, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m., except on City holidays. No weekend work will occur.
Q3: Will repaving equipment be left on the street?
A3: The repaving equipment will have a designated staging area.
Q4: Will the entire street be closed within a 3 to 4 block repaving segment?
A4: No. We plan to close half the street at a time per 3 to 4 block repaving segments. There will be guidance on how through traffic should proceed during the repaving work.
Q5: Will a City employee be available to answer questions?
A5: A City staff manager will be on-site during the repaving work.
