Planning Commission

The Planning Commission is a seven-member decision-making body appointed by City Council and makes recommendations to Council regarding special use permits, development special use permits, requests for vacations of or encroachments on public right-of-ways, rezonings, master plan amendments, zoning text amendments and other requests. The Planning Commission has the authority to approve or deny requests for subdivision of land or development site plans.

Planning Commission Meetings and Information

The City of Alexandria Planning Commission will hold a retreat on Friday, September 25, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Del Pepper Community Resource Center, 4850 Mark Center Drive, Room 1262, Alexandria, VA 22311. The Commission will discuss the Green Building Plan implementation update, long-range planning, and statutory requirements for land use and development applications. The retreat is open to the public; however, public testimony or comment will not be received. The Planning Commission will not take any formal actions or votes. The retreat will not be available to view via webcast or broadcast. The Department of Planning & Zoning will post a recording of the retreat here by the next business day.

The Alexandria Planning Commission meets on the 1st Tuesday of every month (except August) at 7:00 p.m. in Alexandria's City Hall, Council Chambers.
