COVID-19 Emergency Safety Net Services

The Department of Community and Human Services provides Emergency Safety Net Services to residents who face an immediate crisis and need help to resolve the situation. Safety Net Services include, but are not limited to emergency shelter, eviction assistance, prescription assistance, burial assistance and utility turn-off notices.

Utility Assistance 

Links to private utility providers are listed at  alexandriava.gov/Utilities. Check with providers to learn about any assistance for those impacted by COVID-19. The Cooling Assistance Program begins in mid-June each year. For other assistance with utilities, please call the Department of Community and Human Services Customer Call Center at 703.746.5700 or text 703.346.5599.

Renter and Homeowner Assistance

Are you a renter who can’t pay your full rent due to COVID-19 related loss of income? Are you a property owner with a tenant who can’t pay their rent? A homeowner who can't make your mortgage payment? Assistance in Paying for Internet: Emergency Broadband Benefit

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Emergency Broadband Benefit will provide a discount of up to $50 per month towards broadband service for eligible households and up to $75 per month for households on qualifying Tribal lands. Eligible households can also receive a one-time discount of up to $100 to purchase a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from participating providers if they contribute more than $10 and less than $50 toward the purchase price.  Learn more: https://www.fcc.gov/broadbandbenefit

Assistance for Clients of Mental Health, Substance Use Treatment and Developmental Disability Services

If you or a member of your household are currently participating in behavioral health services through a program of the Alexandria Community Services Board, please speak with your therapist or case manager about accessing financial support from Friends of Alexandria Mental Health, Inc. Friends provides assistance to eligible clients for such bills as utilities, prescriptions, small medical or dental bills, security deposits and portions of rent.

Funeral Expense Assistance

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is making funds available for some COVID-19 related funeral expenses to help ease pandemic’s financial stress and burden. The program will cover up to $9,000 per funeral that occurred after January 20, 2020, and requires that the death certificate clearly indicate that COVID-19 contributed to the cause of death.
