Ted Pulliam, a freelance writer who focuses on our city’s history, will discuss two chapters in his recent book, True Tales of Old Alexandria. In the first, a remarkable Englishwoman becomes, in 1654, the first European to own land in what would become Alexandria. In the second, the British navy sails up the Potomac River during the War of 1812 and loots defenseless Alexandria. However, when the British must sail back downriver, Alexandrians take their revenge.

Ted’s articles have appeared in several national magazines, the Washington Post, and other publications. He is author of Historic Alexandria: An Illustrated History, published by the City of Alexandria. In True Tales of Old Alexandria, Ted brings to light a collection of stories from the history of the city and the surrounding area from 1623 to 2018. A current member of the Alexandria Archaeological Commission and Alexandria African American Heritage Trail Committee, Ted also is a past member of the AHS Board and the Alexandria Waterfront Commission. He is a graduate of Davidson College and Columbia University Law School and lives in Del Ray with his wife, Molly.
