Peeling Back the Layers: Gadsby's Specialty Tour

For Preservation Month, see the multiple layers of Gadsby's Tavern Museum in this specialty tour! Explore the 18th century buildings, including spaces rarely opened to the public. From graffiti in the attic to clues about the building's construction date in the basement, learn to "read" a building and its changes through time. Wear comfortable shoes, be prepared for stairs, and bring your camera! The tour begins in the shop of Gadsby’s Tavern Museum.

Gadsby's Tavern Museum consists of two buildings, a ca. 1785 tavern and the 1792 City Tavern and Hotel. Named for Englishman John Gadsby who operated them from 1796 to 1808, the tavern businesses were central to Alexandria’s port-based economy, offering spaces to dine, spend the night, and enjoy games, performances, music, and dance.

Tickets are $15, $12 for Office of Historic Alexandria members. Tickets can be purchased at shop.alexandriava.gov.

Gadsby’s Tavern Museum is located at 134 N. Royal St. in Old Town, Alexandria.
