City Hall

Alexandria City Hall was erected in 1817 on the site designated for the market and city hall when Alexandria was founded in 1749. The current building dates from 1871, with a 1961 addition.

Market Square

Alexandria’s Market Square was established soon after the town was founded in 1749. The Old Town Farmers’ Market continues to be held every Saturday morning.

Police Department

After constables and night watchmen had protected Alexandria for nearly 100 years, the Alexandria Police Department was officially organized in 1870. 

Old Alexandria Jail

Sheriff's Office

The history of the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office dates to the 18th century when the town was incorporated in 1779. The following year, the local court appointed a Town Sergeant who also served as the town's jailer.

Fire Station 201 is located in Old Town at 317 Prince St.

Fire Department

Private fire companies protected Alexandria until the Civil War. The City established a paid fire department in 1866.
