Kits include printed copies of the lessons as well as hands-on objects you can use in your classroom. Many of the lessons, while designed to be used with the primary source kits,  can also be used as stand-alone activities.

Rental Information

Cost: $15 if the kit is picked up from the museum; $35 if the museum ships the kit. The individual renting is responsible for costs associated with returning the kit on time.

Length of rental: 3 weeks

To book a rental, contact the Office of Historic Alexandria Youth and Family Program Coordinator at 703.746.4735 or through Alex311, preferably at least three weeks in advance.

Please select your kit from the options below:

Working from primary sources, including maps, diary entries and early newspaper ads, students discover what life was like in the 18th century and explore the important role a tavern played in society. The hands-on clothing, objects, and games work well in the classroom and for Colonial Days.

All lesson plans are based on primary sources and the reproduction objects included in the kit.  The teacher only needs to supply materials for the craft activities. All of the worksheets are reproducible and student-ready.

Pick up is from Gadsby's Tavern Museum, 134 N. Royal Street, during regular museum hours.

What was it like living in Alexandria during the Civil War? Learn about the soldiers, civilians, and those seeking freedom who lived in the occupied city. The rich array of teaching resources includes primary source documents such as letters and soldiers’ narratives, photographs, slides which portray life in camp, and a music cassette tape of Civil War songs. Hands-on reproduction objects in the soldier’s haversack and lady’s purse are also featured.

Pick up is from Fort Ward Museum during regular museum hours.
