About the Park

Schuyler Hamilton Jones Skatepark
3540 Wheeler Avenue

  • Opened in 2005, the Schuyler Hamilton Jones Skatepark was created with extensive input and support from the community. This unique park shares a 4.3-acre lot with Luckett Ballfield and proudly stands as the City’s first and only skatepark.
  • Covering 12,000 square feet, the skatepark features a variety of modular equipment, including jumps, pipes, rails, wedges, and boxes, catering to skaters of all skill levels.
  • The park is named in memory of Schuyler Hamilton Jones, a 16-year-old T.C. Williams High School student who passed away in 2003. He was actively involved in the Friends of Skatepark program and ramp design.

Planning Process

Park Planning Process

Past:

  • In 2015, the Park and Recreation Commission approved replacing the Schuyler Hamilton Jones Skatepark's modular features with a concrete design.

2015 Park Document

Present:

  • The City’s Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities Department (RPCA) is seeking community feedback to plan future improvements. Your input will guide potential upgrades.

NEXT Steps:

  • After gathering feedback, we will post potential recommendations on our project webpage for public review. The Park and Recreation Commission will then review and consider endorsing them. Approved recommendations will support the City in pursuing grant funding and competing for resources through the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) process.

Completed Improvements

Sign Replacements

  • The biographical sign has been replaced.
  • Procurement for the donor sign replacement is complete, and the final proof is currently under review. Fabrication is set to take place this spring, followed by installation this fall.

Equipment Repairs

  • Repairs have been completed on the equipment to ensure the park’s safety. Staff continue to conduct regular maintenance to keep the site safe and accessible for all users.

PARKnership Projects

  • The approved PARKnership project for the Skate Equipment Donation Box was successfully implemented and installed in 2024.

Short-term Improvements

Since there is no funding currently allocated for the renovation of the park, RPCA is exploring options for quick, low or no-cost interim improvements. These enhancements might include suggestions such as removing or rearranging certain skatepark equipment to improve the layout and flow of the park. Input for these short-term improvements will be gathered during the community engagement process. Your feedback is invaluable!

Community Engagement

The community survey was launched on October 7, 2024 and was open from September 27-November 27, 2024. View and download the survey results here.
