BabyCare Alexandria

BabyCare is a Medicaid-approved program provided by the Alexandria Health Department to foster safe and healthy pregnancies and healthy babies. BabyCare nurses are experts in the health of mothers and children who provide in-home care services like: 

  • Check-ins to make sure you are healthy before, during, and after the birth of your baby.
  • Developmental screenings to make sure babies are growing up healthy
  • Education about topics like healthy eating, self-care, breastfeeding, and preparing for a baby.
  • Postpartum screenings 
  • Getting connected to resources like Medicaid, rent assistance, mental health services, and career services.

Apply for BabyCare

You can apply for Babycare using our BabyCare Application Form or by calling 703.746.4988 and asking about BabyCare. 

Not everyone is eligible for BabyCare. You must: 

  • Qualify for Medicaid
  • Live in the City of Alexandria
  • Have health issues or social risks that BabyCare nurses are trained to support

To be eligible, clients must live in the City of Alexandria, be eligible for Medicaid, and have social risks and medical risks listed below.

  • History of physical, sexual, or emotional abuse
  • Unstable living conditions or shelter
  • CPS involvement or history
  • Lack of support systems
  • Previous fetal or infant death

  • Current pregnancy with a birth defect or genetic condition
  • History of depression or other mental illness
  • History of infectious disease
  • Age 18 or younger
  • Multiparity < 20 years old
  • Failure to thrive
  • Premature birth or low birthweight
  • Breastfeeding support
  • Significant medical conditions
  • Substance exposed newborn
  • Developmental delay concern or diagnosis

The BabyCare Program is available to pregnant women and children under the age of two who are enrolled in Virginia Medicaid or most Virginia Medicaid Managed Care programs.
