Human-Centered Mobility

Human-Centered Mobility puts people at the center of Alexandria’s transportation innovation. This pillar expands flexible, user-focused travel options, such as shared micromobility, bikeshare, and car-sharing, to improve accessibility, convenience, and equity across the City. By integrating new technologies and multimodal planning, the initiative supports safer, more sustainable, and more connected mobility for all residents, workers, and visitors.

Project Description: Human-Centered Mobility

The City of Alexandria is advancing a Multimodal Mobility Expansion Initiative under the broader Human-Centered Mobility pillar, which focuses on expanding flexible, user-focused transportation options to enhance accessibility, convenience, and equity across the City’s transportation network.

This initiative provides residents, commuters, and visitors with more sustainable, flexible, and convenient ways to travel while supporting the City’s broader goals for safety, accessibility, and environmental sustainability. By integrating emerging technologies and data-driven planning, Alexandria is creating a transportation system that meets diverse user needs and supports a more inclusive and connected community.

What It Means for You

Residents and visitors will have more ways to get around without relying solely on personal vehicles, improving access to jobs, schools, and essential services throughout Alexandria. These expanded mobility choices reduce parking demand and congestion, while supporting the City’s Vision Zero, sustainability, and climate action goals.

Through initiatives like the Dockless Mobility Pilot, Capital Bikeshare Expansion, and Car-Sharing Program, Alexandria is building a more connected and equitable mobility ecosystem. Whether walking, biking, driving, or using transit, users will benefit from a safer, smarter, and more sustainable transportation network.

Goal

To create an adaptive, multimodal transportation system that enhances quality of life, reduces congestion, and supports a more sustainable and equitable future for all Alexandria residents and visitors.
