Transportation History of Alexandria

Transportation, or how people and goods move from one place to another, has changed over time as new technologies are introduced. Materials include a short video, worksheet, and maps.

Photographs as Primary Sources

A short video and worksheets walk students through using photographs to learn about the past.

The 1939 Library Sit-In

Historic Alexandria is a partner on this project from New America to provide teachers with resources to teach the History of Civil Rights through the 1939 Library Sit-In that took place in Alexandria.

Contact our Youth and Family Programs Coordinator at 703.746.4735 or through Alex311 to arrange for an in-person training or teacher-only field trip with Historic Alexandria. You can also request to be added to the invitation list for special teacher preview nights for exhibits.

Student Research Resources

Older students can conduct their own research using online and in-person resources. Students are also welcome to visit museums for projects. Any student who mentions working on a school project receives free admission. If a museum visit is part of an assignment or extra credit, please notify our Youth and Family Programs Coordinator at 703.746.4735 or through Alex311.

This archive provides access to short secondary source articles about local history.
