Volunteering at Gadsby's Tavern Museum
Volunteering at Gadsby's Tavern Museum
Gadsby's Tavern Museum is able to offer guided tours and special programs thanks to its dozens of volunteers. See below for current opportunities.
Junior Docent Program
Each year in March, Gadsby’s Tavern Museum accepts applications from 4th through 6th graders interested in participating in the Junior Docent Program. Junior Docents build confidence and public speaking skills by learning the museum tour and talking with museum visitors Sundays during the summer.
Applications for the 2024 season are open through March 15. Students provide stationed tours throughout the rooms of the museum on summer Sundays from 2 and 5 p.m. late June through Labor Day weekend. Please click below to apply to the Junior Docent program. For more information about the program, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator through Alex311.
Current Volunteer Opportunities
We are not recruiting for new volunteer tour guides at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum at this time. Our next training for new tour guides will take place in the winter of 2025. Please watch for an announcement of those training dates here and apply at that time.
If interested in volunteering sooner, you may want to consider volunteering at another Alexandria museum. And be sure to join check our Calendar of Events for festivals, lectures, and other fun and interesting ways to participate.

Interested in volunteering? Submit a volunteer application to receive an invitation to the next training class.
Gadsby's Tavern Museum trains volunteers to provide guided tours of the Museum to visitors from around the world. After completing training, volunteers are asked to give at least one shift (approximately three hours) per month. Volunteer training begins with an informational session that covers many of the basics of volunteering with the Museum.
Volunteer Benefits
Current volunteers receive free parking during their shifts and a discount in the museum shop. Volunteers also receive free reciprocal admission to other museums in Alexandria and throughout the region. Ongoing professional development opportunities are provided about Alexandria’s history, the museum’s history specifically, and interpretation and public speaking techniques.
