Fiscal Year 2025
On Wednesday, May 1, the Alexandria City Council unanimously adopted a Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 General Fund Operating Budget of $926.4 million, which represents a 4.8% increase from the FY 2024 budget. The approved budget focuses on the City’s commitment to quality education, improved city services, public safety and mental health services, and affordable housing while maintaining established fiscal policies. Fiscal Year 2024
On May 3, 2023, the Alexandria City Council unanimously adopted a Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 General Fund Operating Budget of 884.3 million, $45.1 million more than compared to the FY 2023 Approved Budget and an additional $3.2 million more than the FY 2024 City Manager Proposed Budget. Of the $3.2 million funding increase approved by City Council through add/delete, roughly one-half is to reduce Capital Improvement Program (CIP) borrowing for ongoing financial sustainability, and the other half is to expand or improve services provided in the operating budget. The FY 2024 approved budget includes $258.7 million in operating funds for the Alexandria City Public Schools, a $9.9 million (or 4.0%) increase over FY 2023 funding. The budget proposal also includes significant capital investments for stormwater management infrastructure; educational facilities; and maintenance of existing City assets and facilities, totaling $2.40 billion (11.7%) over 10 years in Alexandria’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP). FY 2024 begins on July 1, 2023, and ends June 30, 2024.
Fiscal Year 2023
On May 4, 2022, the Alexandria City Council unanimously adopted a Fiscal Year (FY) 2023 General Fund Operating Budget of $839.2 million, which represents an increase of 8.9% over the current year. The budget approved by City Council leaves the real estate tax rate unchanged at $1.11 per $100 of assessed value. The FY 2023 budget funds 100% of the Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) School Board’s approved capital improvement program and operating budget. The adopted budget includes $33.9 million in priority investments, including climate change, employee compensation; DASH service expansion; affordable housing, the City’s race and social equity initiative; early childhood and other support programs for young Alexandrians; and public safety supporting initiatives, including the Alexandria Co-Response Program (ACORP) and the Body Worn Camera program. The investments also include 4850 Mark Center Drive, which will house the Department of Community and Human Services, the Alexandria Health Department, and a West End service center, making City services more accessible to residents. FY 2023 begins on July 1, 2022, and ends June 30, 2023.
Fiscal Year 2022
On February 16, 2021, City Manager Mark Jinks presented the Alexandria City Council with a proposed Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 General Fund Operating Budget of $767.6 million, which represents an increase of 1.9% over the current year. The proposed budget includes $239 million in operating funds for the Alexandria City Public Schools, a $5 million (or 2.1%) increase over FY 2021 funding. The budget proposal also includes increases in capital investments for stormwater management infrastructure; redevelopment of Landmark Mall; municipal fiber projects; and educational and municipal facilities, totaling $2.66 billion over 10 years in Alexandria’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP). Fiscal Year 2021
On April 29, 2020, the Alexandria City Council unanimously adopted a Fiscal Year (FY) 2021 General Fund Operating Budget of $753.3 million, which represents decrease of 1.6% over the current year. The real estate tax rate remains at $1.13 per $100 of assessed value. The approved budget reflects the changes submitted by the City Manager on April 7, 2020 in response to the COVID-19 public health emergency. The approved budget includes $234.0 million in operating funds for public schools (a 1.0%, or $2.4 million increase over FY 2020 funding), and invests $2.1 billion over 10 years in Alexandria’s Capital Improvement Program. Fiscal Year 2020
On May 1, 2019, the Alexandria City Council unanimously adopted a Fiscal Year (FY) 2020 General Fund Operating Budget of $761.5 million, which represents an increase of just 1.75% over the current year. The approved budget includes $231.7 million in operating funds for public schools (a 3.5%, or $7.8 million increase over FY 2019 funding), and invests $1.62 billion over 10 years in Alexandria’s Capital Improvement Program. FY 2020 begins on July 1, 2019 and ends June 30, 2020.

Fiscal Year 2019
On May 3, 2018, City Council approved a $748.4 million General Fund operating budget for FY 2019, with a real estate tax rate that has remained unchanged from 2017 at $1.13 per $100 of assessed value.
