In recognition of World AIDS Day on December 1, the Alexandria Health Department is co-sponsoring a World AIDS Day HIV/AIDS Service Awards Reception with the Alexandria Commission on HIV/AIDS, Unique Definition, Inc., Arlington Gay & Lesbian Alliance, and Northern Virginia HIV Prevention and Education Committee. This year, we honor Khadijah Abdullah, Executive Director of RAHMA (Reaching all HIV+ Muslims in America), for her tireless work throughout the region to reduce the stigma associated with HIV in faith communities. Among her many projects, Ms. Abdullah established the first National Faith & HIV Awareness Day, held on August 27, 2017. 

As part of our reception, we will also recognize the work and leadership of other community members in HIV prevention.

HIV in the US Today

Approximately 15% of people living with HIV are unaware of their infection, and are estimated to account for almost 40% of ongoing transmissions in the US. Individuals who are aware of their HIV infection can not only receive critical HIV care (which can preserve immune function, decrease risk for morbidity and mortality, and reduce risk of transmission) but reduce the risk of passing the disease to others through more responsible behavior.
