Project Background
On February 1, 2017, the City of Alexandria completed changes to the intersection of Mount Vernon Avenue and Glebe Road.
Project Goals
The project goals were the following:
- Improve the safety of pedestrians crossing Mount Vernon Avenue
- Improve the visibility of pedestrians at all crossings.
- Reduce conflicting turning movements between all roadway users.
Project Plans
The following changes were implemented:
- Installed Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPIs) for crosswalks on Mount Vernon Avenue at Glebe Road [COMPLETE]
- A LPI is a traffic signalization change that gives pedestrian an exclusive 5 second signal to begin crossing the street before vehicles on the same approach receive a green light. The City has implemented LPIs at signalized intersection elsewhere in the City (such as Braddock Road & Commonwealth Avenue) where conflicting movements between pedestrians and drivers is an issue. - Posted "No Turn on Red" signs on Glebe Road for east and west approaches at intersection with Mount Vernon Avenue [COMPLETE]
- Installed right turn arrow for eastbound Glebe Road right turn onto Mount Vernon Avenue [COMPLETE]
- Converted westbound Glebe Road left turn to a protected left turn only [COMPLETE]
Previous Meetings
On Monday, January 23, the City's Traffic and Parking Board approved these changes to the intersection of Mount Vernon Ave and Glebe Road.
