Note:  It is important to note that the drop in routine medical visits during the COVID-19 pandemic may have reduced the positive cases caught through testing that are reflected in the data below.

Syphilis

Congenital Syphilis

  • Statewide, the number of diagnoses of congenital syphilis, in which a mother passes syphilis to an infant, have increased significantly since 2012. 
  • Since 2014, there have been 120 congenital syphilis diagnoses in Virginia. Over 25% of congenital syphilis diagnoses occurred in Northern Virginia (Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Loudon, and Prince William).

  • In 2023 1,307 people were living with HIV/AIDS in Alexandria.

AHD Service and Reproductive Health Data

The Alexandria Health Department Key Indicator Dashboard has more data about sexual and reproductive health, including: 

  • STI appointment and treatment data
  • Adolescent pregnancy data
  • Participation data for WIC, a program that provides nutrition education, breastfeeding support, food support, counseling, and service referrals for women and children.  

What AHD is Doing

  • STI prevention through vaccination, screening, testing, and contact informing.
  • Counseling for STI treatment
  • Reproductive health services and counseling
  • Sexual and reproductive health data analysis
  • Community outreach and education
  • Teen-centered support through the Teen Wellness Center. 
  • Participating in Alexandria's HIV/STI Task Force.
