Smart Curb Solutions
Smart Curb Solutions
The Smart Curb Solutions initiative is transforming how Alexandria manages curb space and parking through the use of advanced data, mapping, and digital infrastructure tools. By leveraging the Curb Data Specification (CDS) and Open Mobility standards, the City is building a modern, connected framework that supports efficient, equitable, and future-ready curbside management.Through this effort, the City is digitally mapping all curb zones, parking restrictions, and loading areas to create a standardized, open-data model that can be shared with third-party mobility providers, delivery companies, and autonomous vehicles. This enables seamless coordination across public and private transportation systems, improving access, compliance, and traffic flow.
Project Description: Smart Parking Management
As part of the VDOT Parking Technologies Grant, the City of Alexandria will implement technology applications to enable data-driven decision-making in support of the City’s parking and curbside management policies. The initiative focuses on curb data mapping and smart parking tools that enhance compliance, optimize curb utilization, and strengthen operational efficiency.
The project will map, document, and digitize curb regulations, restrictions, and zones using the Curb Data Specification (CDS) standard, a nationally recognized framework that enables cities to manage and share curb information in a consistent digital format. This work will create a detailed inventory of the City’s curb assets, regulations, and usage patterns to support real-time parking management and integration with third-party applications such as rideshare, delivery, and navigation services.
Once implemented, the project will improve the City’s ability to:
- Optimize parking availability and curb usage through data analytics and visualization tools;
- Support dynamic pricing and policy decisions to balance residential, commercial, and loading needs; and
- Lay the groundwork for integration with future connected, electric, and autonomous vehicle systems.
Together, these efforts will advance the City’s transition toward smarter, more connected curbside operations, supporting both economic vitality and sustainable transportation goals.
Overall Project Status
The project is active and scheduled to begin implementation in FY 2026. Staff are coordinating across departments to finalize technical specifications and prepare for curb data collection efforts.
Once deployed, this initiative will enable the City to better manage parking assets in real time, improve accessibility for residents and businesses, and provide a digital foundation for future smart mobility applications.
