Digital Mobility Ecosystem
Digital Mobility Ecosystem
The Digital Mobility Ecosystem is transforming how Alexandria manages, analyzes, and plans its transportation network by connecting data, infrastructure, and innovation to create a more adaptive, efficient, and resilient city. Through this initiative, the City is developing a citywide digital twin, a virtual model of Alexandria’s transportation system that integrates data from traffic signals, sensors, and connected infrastructure—to enable real-time monitoring, predictive analytics, and smarter decision-making across departments. In partnership with the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) and the Smart Mobility Lab, the program advances data-driven operations to enhance traffic management and safety, integrates smart infrastructure to improve multimodal mobility, applies AI and simulation tools for planning and scenario testing, and strengthens readiness for connected and automated vehicle (CAV) technologies. Together, these efforts lay the foundation for a fully connected, intelligent transportation network that positions Alexandria at the forefront of smart city innovation and digital infrastructure modernization.
Project Description: Digital Mobility Ecosystem
The purpose of this project is to establish the foundation of Alexandria’s Digital Mobility Ecosystem, a next-generation data and analytics framework designed to improve transportation operations, planning, and decision-making. Funded through the Commonwealth’s Innovation and Technology Transportation Fund (ITTF), this effort focuses on developing a functional digital twin for Citywide transportation management.
The project integrates multiple smart mobility components, including real-time traffic data feeds, AI-enabled sensors, and a centralized data platform. By consolidating information across the City’s intelligent transportation systems, the Digital Mobility Ecosystem will allow staff to simulate traffic scenarios, identify issues proactively, and coordinate operational responses with greater precision.
In partnership with the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) and the Smart Mobility Lab, the City will deploy new sensing technologies and data-sharing tools that support predictive analytics, connected vehicle research, and long-term transportation innovation.
Overall Project Status
The project is active and beginning implementation in FY 2025, following successful award notification and funding authorization through the ITTF program. The City is currently coordinating with VTTI and state partners on a detailed scope of work, procurement of hardware and data infrastructure, and initial deployment of the digital twin platform.
This initiative represents a major advancement in Alexandria’s Smart Mobility Program, supporting cross-departmental collaboration, cloud-based data integration, and enhanced operational analytics capabilities.
