Glebe Road Pedestrian and Bicycle Improvements (2017)
Project Background
East and West Glebe Road, between Russell Road and Route 1, was evaluated for improvements to address community concerns regarding pedestrian & bicyclists safety, excessive vehicle speeds, difficultly accessing bus stops and a lack of clarity for left-turning motorists at the Route 1 intersection.
Project Goals
To address concerns raised by residents, the project goals were identified as the following:
- Improve the safety and convenience for all street users
- Provide facilities for people who walk, bike, ride transit or drive cars
- Implement City Council adopted plans and policies, such as the City's Complete Streets Policy and Pedestrian & Bicycle Master Plan.
Plans
The project will address the goals by making the following improvements:
East Glebe Road, between Commonwealth and Route 1:
- Narrowing existing travel lane widths that encourage vehicular speeding
- No right turn on red signage for southbound Commonwealth Avenue
- Installation of high visibility crosswalks
- Installation of concrete loading pads to make bus stops ADA-compliant
- Provides greater clarity for motorists turning left from Glebe Road
- Installation of bicycle climbing lane facilities in the eastbound direction between Commonwealth Ave. and Route 1
- Reduces effective crossing distance for pedestrians
- Visually narrows the travel lane width for drivers and reduces vehicle speeds
- Does not impact parking or turn lanes at the Route 1 intersection.
- Priority shared lane markings in the westbound direction between Route 1 and Wilson Ave.
- Installation of bicycle lanes in the westbound direction between Wilson Ave. and Commonwealth Ave.
- Provides bicycle box on southbound Commonwealth Ave.
- Increases visibility of bicyclists at intersection
- Prevent conflicts with cyclists going straight and right turning vehicles
- Pedestrians benefit from reduced vehicle encroachment into the crosswalk
-
Accommodates left turning bicyclists turning from the right-side bike lanes on southbound Commonwealth Avenue to the right-side bike lanes on eastbound East Glebe Road toward Potomac Yard
A typical cross-section showing the plan for East Glebe Road is shown below.
West Glebe Road, between Russell Road and Mount Vernon Ave.
- Narrowing existing travel lane widths that encourage vehicular speeding
- Installation of high visibility crosswalks at Russell Road
- Installation of concrete pads to make bus stops ADA-compliant
- Installation of priority shared lane markings in both directions
