Project Background

The portion of Taney Avenue between North Van Dorn Street and Taney Avenue Park was resurfaced in Summer 2016. As part of that project, the section of Taney Avenue between North Pegram Street and North Latham Street was evaluated for improvements to address concerns raised by residents which include the following:

  • Pedestrian safety for students and parents walking to and from Patrick Henry and James K. Polk schools
  • Excessive vehicle speeds
  • Unsafe for people who bike
  • Difficult to access bus stops

Project Goals

To address concerns raised by residents, the project goals were identified as the following:

  • Improve the safety and convenience for all street users
  • Provide facilities for people who walk, bike, ride transit or drive cars
  • Implement City Council adopted plans and policies, such as the City's Complete Streets Policy

Plans

The project will address the goals by making the following improvements:

  • Narrowing existing travel lane widths that encourage vehicular speeding
  • Installation of high visibility crosswalks at N. Latham St., N. Pickett St. and N. Pegram St.
  • Installation of concrete pads to make bus stops ADA-compliant
  • Installation of bicycle facilities
    • Reduces effective crossing distance for pedestrians
    • Visually narrows the travel lane width for drivers and reduces vehicle speeds
    • Connects existing bike lanes near Patrick Henry with existing bike lanes on N. Pegram St.
    • Does not impact parking

More detailed information can be found on the final design plan .
