Project Description

The purpose of this project is to improve safety along South Whiting Street for people walking and biking. Potential solutions include reducing speed, improving pedestrian crossings, increasing sight distances, restriping, and enhancing bus stops.

Project Map

Map of potential safety improvements along South Whiting Street to support safer walking, biking, driving, and bus access along the corridor.

Project Background

In coordination with planned street resurfacing, the City of Alexandria is exploring safety and access improvements to South Whiting Street, between Stevenson Avenue and Edsall Road. South Whiting Street is a local street that serves residential uses and commercial uses.

The City's Complete Streets Five-Year Work Plan includes a project to improve pedestrian crossing opportunities on South Whiting Street. Upon review of traffic data and crash history, the scope of the project expanded to include other opportunities for traffic safety improvements.

There have been 22 traffic crashes since 2017 on this corridor alone. Of those, 6 resulted in people being injured. Speeding is also common on this corridor, presenting a high risk of injury to people walking, biking, and taking transit.
