Weekly testing has continued and since January 18, only one new inmate case has been identified. The situation is no long considered an active outbreak and regular operations, with standard covid precautions, have resumed.

January 13, 2022, 10 a.m.

Since identifying the initial outbreak, ASO command and medical staff have conducted testing of all inmates and all employees. Currently 95 inmates are positive, however none is symptomatic.

Several employees also tested positive, and a number have already recovered and returned to work.

Additional testing will be conducted weekly, and staff will continue to adjust protocols as necessary, in consultation with jail medical staff and the Alexandria Health Department.

December 30, 2021, 5:30 p.m.

On December 29 and 30, 2021, the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office received test results that confirmed several inmates at the Adult Detention Center had tested positive for covid. Some had reported covid-like symptoms earlier in the week and out of concern, staff had all inmates in two housing units tested. Of the 75 inmates tested, 26 were positive, one of whom is exhibiting mild symptoms.

All inmates in the effected housing units are now quarantined and as of December 29, the entire facility, which currently houses 274 inmates, has been placed on restricted movement. Additionally, attorney-client and social visits are suspended, and other measures are being implemented.

Several employees have also tested positive and are quarantining at their homes.

The Sheriff’s Office will be expanding covid testing among staff and inmates and will make adjustments to its protocols as necessary.
