Project Description

The purpose of this project is to address concerns heard from residents related to traffic safety. Approved treatments include improving pedestrian crossings, increasing sight distances, restriping, making the corridor safer for people walking and biking, and improving bus stops.

Project Background

The project corridor spans South and North Jordan Streets, from the Holmes Run Trail to North Howard Street. South Jordan Street is a local street that serves residential uses, commercial uses, and recreational uses near the Holmes Run Trail, Brenman Park and Tarleton Park. North Jordan Street is a major collector that acts as important link between Duke Street and points north, serving the Foxchase Shopping Center, residential uses, WMATA Metrobus services, and provides access to the Patrick Henry School and Recreation Center, and Inova Alexandria Hospital.

The City's Complete Streets Five-Year Work Plan includes a project to improve traffic safety on South Jordan Street in response to neighborhood concerns. Upon review of crash history and other safety data along North Jordan Street, the City expanded the scope of the traffic safety project to include all of Jordan Street between the Holmes Run Trail to North Howard Street.

There have been 60 traffic crashes since 2017 on this corridor alone. Of those, a third resulted in people being injured. Speeding is also common on this corridor, presenting a high risk of injury to people walking, biking, and taking transit.

Other plans and projects that impact the corridor include the Proposed Bicycle Network in the adopted Alexandria Mobility Plan, which calls for a dedicated bicycle facility along the Jordan Street corridor, and the Safe Routes to School Walk Audit for Patrick Henry School, which calls for curb extensions at the intersection of Taney Avenue and North Jordan Street to assist with traffic calming.
