Taney Avenue Traffic Calming Project
What's New
The City completed the project August 2025. The City will continue to evaluate the project area to determine if any adjustments are appropriate.
Project Background
Taney Avenue is a two-lane roadway located within the Brookville-Seminary Valley neighborhood, designed to accommodate on-street parking and bike lanes in some areas. Despite its residential setting, Taney Avenue experiences travel speeds higher than the 25 MPH speed limit and low compliance with stop signs. This roadway serves as an important access point to two elementary schools and a local recreational center, making it a key route for children and families. The combination of higher travel speeds, the presence of schools, and recreational facilities led to community requests for improvements to enhance safety and reduce potential hazards for people who travel here.
This project focuses on the portion of Taney Avenue between Howard Street and N. Pegram Street (see map below).
Project Goals
The project goal, developed in coordination with the community, is to create a safer street through the following strategies:
- Encourage slower travel speeds through Taney Avenue
- Encourage intersection stop sign compliance
- Improve travel safety for vulnerable users
- Continue connectivity for all road users
These strategies to meet the project goals are consistent with the City’s Alexandria Mobility Plan and the Vision Zero Program.
