Issue 1 - Summer 2025

Protecting What Matters

Alexandria’s historic charm and vibrant waterfront are central to our city’s identity and to your business. But repeated flooding threatens that identity — damaging property, disrupting commerce, and putting lives and livelihoods at risk.

That’s why the City of Alexandria is undertaking the Waterfront Flood Mitigation Project (WFMP) — a major infrastructure effort designed to safeguard the Old Town waterfront from increasingly frequent and severe flooding.

Why This Matters to You

Without action, flooding at the foot of Prince Street — one of the most impacted areas — could flood almost every day of the year. That means nearly daily disruptions for small businesses, residents, and visitors alike.

The WFMP is not about building walls, it’s about preserving business operations, protecting community investments, and securing the economic future of the waterfront. This project represents a long-term commitment to make Alexandria’s waterfront more resilient, more accessible, and more welcoming year-round.

Community-Centered, Business-Focused

We know that no one understands the waterfront better than the people who live and work here. That’s why the City is committed to listening first and working together. As we advance the WFMP, we’re launching a robust engagement process including:

  • Door-to-door outreach to waterfront businesses and property owners;
  • Business stakeholder meetings focused on concerns, opportunities, and collaboration; and
  • Ongoing community events and updates to ensure transparency every step of the way.

We want to hear from you—your input will shape not just how we build, but how we serve.

A Smart Investment in a World-Class City

The WFMP is a major investment in the people, families, and businesses that make Alexandria one of the best places to live and visit in the country. Through this project, we’re working to:

  • Reduce flood damage and emergency disruptions;
  • Enhance pedestrian access and open space along the waterfront;
  • Support long-term business continuity and tourism; and
  • Protect the legacy of our historic core while preparing for the future.
