The City of Alexandria is engaged in several projects to improve transit and mitigate traffic along the Duke Street corridor.

The City is advancing a variety of initiatives to improve transit along the Duke Street corridor. Based on community input and ideas received to date, there are a number of projects underway that address community priorities such as reliable transit, improved safety, and keeping Duke Street moving for all users.

Duke Street In Motion

Duke Street In Motion is a multi-phased effort focused on ensuring that transit improvements in the Duke Street corridor, from the Landmark Mall area to the King Street Metro Station, provide efficient transportation options that align with the community’s needs, provide efficient transportation choices, and keep the region moving.

Duke Street Traffic Mitigation Pilots

The City finalized two pilot projects to look at improving traffic on Duke Street with the goal of reducing cut-through traffic on neighborhood streets. The pilots were successful and have been implemented. The City is currently looking at other signal timing modifications to further reduce rush hour congestion along the corridor.

Duke Street and West Taylor Run Project

The Duke Street and West Taylor Run Parkway Project aims to improve safety at this high crash location while reducing neighborhood cut-through traffic. The project will redesign the intersection in conjunction with the addition of a new ramp to access Telegraph Road. The project team will be working with the community this fall to work through service road designs.

Adaptive Traffic Signal Control

Alexandria is rolling out intelligent traffic signals that respond and adapt to real-time vehicle location and movement data, optimizing traffic flow, decreasing delays, and reducing stops at various intersections throughout the city, including the Duke Street corridor.

Duke Street & Route 1 Intersection Safety Improvements

The purpose of this project is to improve safety at two intersections: Duke Street & South Henry Street, and Duke Street & South Patrick Street. The City conducted safety audits at these locations and will bring recommended improvements to the Traffic and Parking Board for approval later this year.

Duke Street Turn Calming

The Duke Street Turn Calming project aims to improve safety on Duke Street between North Ripley Street and North Jordan Street by installing vehicle turn-calming treatments at key intersections.
