The Alexandria Sheriff’s Office has contracted with Smart Communications to provide inmate privileged communications for approved registered attorneys, public defenders and other approved privileged professionals. These changes have been made to streamline privileged communications between counsel and inmates, improve legal mail distribution, maintain privacy, and ensure the safety and well-being of inmates and staff.

Messaging and Video Visitation
Approved attorneys, public defenders, and other privileged professionals can connect to their client/inmate by creating a privileged account on www.SmartInmate.com. Once the account has been approved for privileged communications, the attorney, public defender, or other privileged professional will be able to e-message (up to 30,000 characters) and schedule privilege video visitation with their client/inmate with the Smart Communication’s assurance that no communications are recorded or viewable to staff, Smart Communications representatives, or available through discovery.

Legal Mail – Hard Copy
Legal mail to clients at the Adult Detention Center can be mailed to their attention or dropped off at 2001 Mill Road, Alexandria, VA, 22314. Hard copy legal mail will be processed through the MailGuard® Legal Cart (at right), digitized, and approved by the client/inmate to be made available to the client/inmate on their assigned device. The scanned legal mail is double password protected to ensure client attorney privileges are upheld and are not available to the Sheriff's Office staff nor Smart Communications representatives.

Legal Mail – Digital Files
Legal Mail Digital Upload is available to approved registered attorneys, public defenders and other approved privileged professionals on their SmartInmate profile. Approved registered attorneys, public defenders and other approved privileged professionals can upload a PDF format file up to 60MB to their connected client/inmate with immediate delivery to their client/inmate’s double password protected Legal Mail application on the assigned device. Legal Mail Digital Upload eliminates any physical interaction with facility staff, saves time and improves delivery efforts, while providing the client/inmate with instant availability to their legal mail.

Legal Mail – Document Sign
Legal Mail Document Sign is available to the approved registered attorneys, public defenders, and other approved privileged professionals on their SmartInmate profile. Approved registered attorneys, public defenders and other approved privileged professionals can upload a PDF format file, insert required signatures, initials, and/or dates to a document for their client/inmate to fill and return digitally. The client/inmate will receive the PDF file with immediate delivery to their double password protected Legal Mail application on the assigned device, fill in the requirements and send back to the connected, approved and registered attorney, public defender, or other approved privileged professional.
