About the Walk Audits

In 2023, the City of Alexandria will conduct a new round of Walk Audits as part of its Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program. These Walk Audits will identify infrastructure recommendations that improve safety for schoolchildren and families and encourage more children to walk and bike to school. The first phase of walk audits was conducted in 2017.

Five schools are included in Phase 2 of the Walk Audits:

  • Ferdinand T. Day Elementary School
  • George Washington Middle School
  • Francis Hammond Middle School
  • Alexandria City High School (King Street)
  • Alexandria City High School (Minnie Howard)

The Walk Audits are a multi-step process in which the City is partnering with Toole Design, ACPS, and school communities. The process kicks off in January 2023 and will conclude by the end of June 2023. The Community Engagement will occur in February and March.

Third, the City will conduct walk audits at each of the schools. These audits bring experts and members of the school community together to observe on the ground conditions.
